So you are ready to embark on your music career: you've assembled the equipment, got the songs but...still have a feeling that you are missing something...the musicians!..

Finding musicians for your band should be on top of your priority list as they will be your partners in paving a path towards the glamorous future you have always dreamed of.

But before you start looking at every guy carrying a guitar with googly eyes, ask yourself a few questions -

  • What kind of band are you going to make? Rock n Roll..Heavy Metal...Jazz?

  • Is it going to be just something you'd do together on weekends, or more professionally?

  • Will you be the one writing all the songs or will all band members contribute?

  • How will you share the expenses?

Once you have sorted out your priorities, you’ll have a better idea of what you are looking for in a band mate.

Ideally, you'd want to have members who share the same interests and want the same things.

During your search you might come across people who you want in your band, but they are already in some other band; and people who are not in a band that you might consider worth giving a try because you can't find the good ones!

Just remember what your dad told you “Good things come to those who wait!” ...or was it Guinness?

Well anyhow, people who are not in a band already, might be free because no one else wants them, so be sure why you want them in yours.

Where can you find musicians for your band?

Once you know what you want, you can start looking for your future band mates. To help you with your search, here are some tips:

  1. Ask a friend
Let your friends know that you are looking to start a band and you need members. They might have a friend who has a friend, a brother or an uncle who is also looking to put a band together. Also, when it's coming through your friend, you would know the real deal about that guy!

  1. Your friendly neighbourhood music store
Yes, this is the best place to find musicians in your locality. You might have heard that peas in a pod hang together, well this is your pod! Ask the store staff for anyone who might also be looking for a band, and if they allow you, paste a note on the display window.

  1. Recording studios
Okay, not every 'single' musician hangs out here. But if you leave a note, then any one of those who come in for a recording might know someone else who is looking for band mates.

  1. Vast wilderness of the web
Turn on your laptop and google for websites that let you find musicians online. You may or may not be able to find someone close to you, but it's still worth a try. Fingers crossed!
Join My Band, Band Mix and Find a Musician are some of the popular websites.

You can also try leaving notes at as many local corner shops as you can afford, because even though they may not be related to music, they will help you get the word out.
