In my last article Is MySpace worth it for musicians? i discussed the over-reliance on MySpace on the part of younger talent. Now, let’s try and explore a few more possible options for musicians that many just seem to overlook.

In my last article Is MySpace worth it for musicians? i discussed the over-reliance on MySpace on the part of younger talent. Now, let’s try and explore a few more possible options for musicians that many just seem to overlook.

  • Buzznet: This entertainment website let’s you post your own video or a blog to share with it’s users.

  • JammerDirect: This is a social website for artists who are seeking new fans and for fans to experiment with fresh music. Musicians can upload their songs for a dedicated community of music fans who are there to discover fresh voices.

  • Tweewoo: It’s a dedicated music social network that connects music lovers with independent artists and bands from across the world. It let’s music lovers download free MP3s of their favourite bands and provides a dedicated audience for the artists.

  • BuzzedAbout: It offers artists a unique chance to display their work, where fans can search for new talent based on genre and three categories of Top Rated, Most Viewed and Recently Added. They can then download songs through iTunes.

  • Libre.fm: Another one of the popular websites that actively supports independent artists. This is the place to put your music on, if you think it’s good enough to go viral.

  • MOG (US only): With over 16million songs, it is quickly gaining in popularity amongst music lovers. It is a good idea to send a link to your music to the editors, and if it is good enough, it would be noticed.

  • Last.Fm: Similar to MOG, it is quite a popular service for fans, where they can discover new music for their tastes. Drop a line to the editors and you shall be set! Let your music do the talking.

  • Bebo: Upload your music on here, and wait for fans to realise your dreams for you!

  • Pandora (US Only): Another rising star amongst fans, but limited to US only for licensing reasons.

  • iLikeMusic: It is a UK based online music magazine, where young talent is discovered. Couple of big name guest editors means you would be making some big names notice you in no time. Also if you are lucky, you might get picked for a story.

  • Deezer: Integrated with Facebook and with over 20million tracks, Deezer is quite popular. All you need to do is create your own playlist and share. Deezer also let’s users listen to music on the go through Android/iPhone/Blackberry apps.

Apart from the above, there are always the more popular options like Spotify, Garage Band, Reverbnation, Vimeo, YouTube and iTunes.

Also, just a couple of days back, MySpace has unravelled its plans to launch a fresher, cleaner version of the website that looks pretty sleek from the promos. Even though the playboy of social media seems to have a new wingman in yesteryear’s teen heartthrob Justin Timberlake, the pundits are still counting their odds. With news that MySpace’s new music player is going to work in sync with Facebook, as an app, it looks like that MySpace’s future is pretty set after losing its audience and it’s going to end up being a Portfolio website with a music player for Facebook.

All I would recommend is that when you are taking some baby steps, it’s best to hold onto everything good, rather than walking with a stick. E-mail the editors of any and all magazines to review your band, have your profiles across all possible sites and link them together (there are many tools that let you do that), to update it with a single click. Persistence always pays off.

Think smart, be creative and let your music talk!

Update Feb. 2013: in 2013, Myspace launched its new version. Read a review here: The new Myspace experience.
